Pass it on

I learned something about myself recently, which is kinda cool given I am no longer in my teens or twenties. 😉  I learned I love teaching sewing. I always knew I loved to sew myself, but never thought I would be a) qualified, and b) capable of teaching this amazing, soul-satisfying craft to others. But I was wrong. I get a runner’s high from teaching – it is seriously awesome to watch students of all ages light up when they complete their first sewing project, or master a difficult technique. I love to hear the pride in their voices when they talk about garments they have made. I have made loads of new friends, and met people with widely varying motivations regarding learning to sew. I have taught them a few skills, and in turn they have enriched my life. I am pretty sure I am the winner in this arrangement.

I received a wonderful gift when I was a young girl; my mother taught me to sew. Thanks Mom, I am passing it on now.

Happy sewing!

  1. Is that a Bernina 830? Is it as wonderful as all the reviews? I keep hoping I’ll stumble on one at a garage sale!

    Take care,

P.S. Do you know how to do pattern adjustments/fittings? I’d really like to get a basic elastic waist pants pattern tweaked well enough so that I can make basic casual run-around pants.

  2. Cindy,
It is indeed my original Bernina, 35 years old, and going strong! You would be insanely lucky to find one at a garage sale – but you can put your name on a list at Bernina dealers and they will call you when they get one in. I have also successfully bought machines on eBay. And yes, I do know how to fit and adjust patterns – send me an email at!

    Happy sewing!

  3. Well maris your an awesome teacher 😀

I had a question for you: do you know where I can buy 100% rayon fabric in (plain black)??

    • Hey Rachel – good to hear from you! Locally I would check Pacific Fabrics and Nancy’s Sewing basket. Not sure of you want rayon knit or woven – but for knits I would suggest several online sources –,, and Gorgeous Fabrics. You could also go to Sew Expo in Puyallup next weekend – lots of fabric vendors there – and Vogue Fabrics is always a good place for some wonderful bargains and great fabric. What are you planning ot make?

    • I think Pacific Fabrics and Nancy’s Sewing Basket should have some – if not – now – pretty soon. It is a poopular spring and summer fabric. Come to Sew Expo and spend piles of money like I always do! LOL! Good luck on your dress projects, Rachel.

    • It is at the Western Washington Fairgrounds in Puyallup – Thursday thru Sunday. You could go on Friday! Tickets are $12 at the door, and if they have any left, Pacific Fabrics had them for $10. Good luck!
