Quick Tip Tuesday: Baby your silk

June 3, 2014 by SewMaris 2 Comments

If you like to sew with silk, conventional wisdom recommends dry-cleaning. You might want to try washing your silk by hand in baby shampoo + cool water instead. You will save money on dry-cleaning bills and avoid that nasty chemical smell in your clothing. Of course, be sure to test a small piece of your fabric first!

Happy sewing!

Would this same procedure work for taffeta? I made a darling skirt for my 6 month old niece from taffeta, and it’s dry-clean only, but it’s bound to get messy quickly. Being able to wash it at home with this method would be awesome.

I haven’t tried it on taffeta – but I would definitely test on a leftover scrap of fabric. Let me know how it works!
